Maddux Elementary Students Plant Trees to Celebrate Earth Day

Over 100 third graders at Maddux Elementary School took home pine trees today to plant and to celebrate Earth Day. The trees were donated by Zumbiel Packaging.

Stephen Troehler, principal, and Jane Faulkner, teacher, received the trees from Zumbiel’s Charles Mace during the third grade’s Earth Day ceremony. Mr. Mace demonstrated planting a tree at the school and showed how old soft drink boxes make great, biodegradable planters.

“Trees are great for the environment and they make good homes for animals”, said Elijah Price, a Maddux third grader.

The trees will consume greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and they will generate oxygen. The USDA states that trees planted strategically can reduce heating and air conditioning by 25 and 30%, and that trees can help retain rainwater and reduce erosion.
